Festival of the Mind

19th to 29th September 2024

I am pleased to have been invited to showcase several of my artworks at the Festival of the Mind Event. There will be an exhibition and performance which will take place on Friday 20 September, at 3:00pm (duration: 60 minutes).

About the Event: Festival of the Mind sees the brightest minds from the University of Sheffield collaborate with the city’s cultural and creative industries, to help bring their research to life in exciting, entertaining and innovative ways, through a programme of free exhibitions, films, performances, workshops and talks. Open to everyone.

The Second World War looks very different through a Black colonial female lens. Exploring themes of belonging, rejection, displacement and identity, this live performance by Susan Hunter Downer developed from research with Dr Sarah Frank will unearth the stories of Black women and girls and highlight the impact of Britain’s efforts to devalue their ‘human currency’ in its aftermath.

Redbridge Black History Legacy Award

AWARD ARTS & CULTURE
Jacqui receiving award

Date: 1st October 2023

Redbridge Town Hall, London

After participating in several community events, such as the “Windrush 75” and “Evidence of Those Unseen” exhibitions, I am honoured to have been acknowledged as the inaugural recipient of the Redbridge Black History Legacy Award, and accept it on behalf of our community.

This reinforces my passion for sharing stories that highlight the resilience and accomplishments of individuals of African descent. Through my representations, these narratives, which are of great value to our communities, are told and acknowledged with pride. Often, such stories remain untold in British history.

Nominations for the ‘Arts & Culture Award‘ are voted for by Redbridge residents and workers, and identify a person who made an impact on the arts & culture sector. I am truly thankful to each and everyone who voted for me.

'Playing the race card'

Televised on ITV Meridan News on Sunday 23 October 2022.

In support of Black History Month, bringing together the theme ‘you’re playing the race card’ at the Greenhalf Studio in St Leonards-on-Sea, East Sussex.

This is a unique and timely exhibition showcasing 25 contemporary black artists’ response to the powerful ‘playing the race card’ and its complex implications.

I was proud to be invited to exhibit my painting ‘ Caught Up” (Part of the Urban Collection). Especially pleasing was the unexpected presentation of the painting on the ITN Meridan news segment.
