I was pleased to have been invited to showcase several of my artworks at the Festival of the Mind Event, this event comprised of a variety of exhibitions and performances.
The Festival of the Mind is open to everyone, and sees the brightest minds from the University of Sheffield collaborate with the city’s cultural and creative industries, to help bring their research to life in exciting, entertaining and innovative ways, through a programme of free exhibitions, films, performances, workshops and talks.
The Second World War looks very different through a Black colonial female lens. Exploring themes of belonging, rejection, displacement and identity, this live performance by Susan Hunter Downer developed from research with Dr Sarah Frank will unearth the stories of Black women and girls and highlight the impact of Britain’s efforts to devalue their ‘human currency’ in its aftermath.
Evidence of Those Unseen
4th October 2023 to 20th December 2024 (one month extension)
The “Evidence of Those Unseen” exhibition displayed several artworks by Jacqui Cooke, recognising the commitment and sacrifice of Veterans of African Descent and First Nation Individuals.
The call to war, had millions of individuals from the commonwealth volunteer and signup to serve Britain during both WW1 and WW2. The evidence highlights the achievements of these individuals. Several are recognised as the most decorated individuals for their service, committed to serving while facing adversity – by those they served, exceeding beyond expectations to be promoted and commanding over others, as Officers.
Following the ravages of war, many chose to return and help rebuild the country – committed to serving as they called Britain, “The Mother Land.”
