I was beyond excited to present the full collection of my veteran portraits for the first time, a project that has been both a personal and creative journey.

This ongoing collection is part of a larger body of work, with 15 pieces completed out of an intended 30. Each portrait tells the story of remarkable individuals who shaped history, including WWII veterans like Lilian Badar and Connie Mark, as well as WWI veterans Walter Tull and George Bemand—two of many extraordinary men who defied the odds. Tull is celebrated as the first Black officer in the British Army, and Bemand is remembered as one of the few Black veterans to achieve officer status.

To unveil these works at SPACE Studios in Ilford was a true honour. Not only was it a privilege to showcase my art in such a renowned gallery, but it also held deeper significance for me, as I have called this borough (Redbridge) my home for over 25 years. It was a moment of pride to represent my community through my art, making the event even more special and meaningful. The experience was a powerful reminder of how art can honour and reframe the narrative of our history, create connections, and amplify voices that have long been overlooked.

Due to the overwhelming response and success of the exhibition, we were excited to receive a one-month extension! This extension offered even more time for visitors to experience the collection and enjoy the stories of these remarkable veterans.

Introduction to Exhibition

The "Evidence of Those Not Seen" exhibition honours the unwavering commitment and sacrifice of Veterans of African Descent and First Nation individuals. Some of these extraordinary men and women are recognised as among the most decorated for their service, while others demonstrated remarkable resilience by serving in the face of adversity—both from the countries they called home and the nations they fought for.

During both World Wars, millions from Commonwealth nations answered Britain’s call to arms. Many returned after the war, determined to help rebuild and shape the future of a country they proudly called “The Motherland.” Their contributions laid the foundation for the arrival of the Windrush generation, who played a pivotal role in reshaping Britain's cultural landscape.

Join Jacqui as she guides you through this powerful exhibition, Evidence of Those Not Seen—a tribute to the courage, sacrifices, and untold stories of those who fought to make history.
