PORTRAIT AND FIGURATIVE ARTIST

MY ART CELEBRATES LEGACY AND EMPOWERS COMMUNITIES, BY REFRAMING NARRATIVES THROUGH STORYTELLING
Sisterley Love JA Cooke Art
Sisterly Love, 2018

Find art that celebrates hidden legacies, igniting pride and empowerment within the communities they represent while fostering a broader, more inclusive understanding.

Through each piece, I reframe narratives and celebrate cultural identity, leaving a lasting impact on all who experience it. My work inspires, empowers, and educates, offering a deeper connection to a lived history and honouring cultural resilience.

About

MY JOURNEY AND WHO I AM.
Temporary Jacqui picture

I am a self-taught artist, cultural custodian and visual storyteller, dedicated to painting powerful portraits of individuals of African descent—those forgotten by time, made invisible by society, and too often defined by others. Through my art, I challenge perceptions, disrupt expectations, and shine a light on the remarkable legacies of resilience, triumph, and cultural identity that have shaped our world but remain excluded from mainstream narratives.

Purpose
Each portrait is a joyful yet purposeful act of remembrance. Drawing on deep research, intuition, lived experience, and a strong commitment to social justice, I create dynamic, emotionally charged, historically grounded, and spiritually uplifting works.
My practice is rooted in realism, surrealism, and abstraction—techniques I developed through intensive self-study and formal training in an advanced figurative and portraiture course.

My Heritage...
Growing up in London as the child of Jamaican immigrants from the Windrush generation, I was always proud of my heritage and deeply aware of my parents’ sacrifices. Yet I also experienced the tension between navigating their Caribbean cultural history and forging my own British identity. The painful truth was that societal perceptions often shaped my reality more than my own self-perception. These external labels dictated when—or if—I was seen, ultimately leading me to
abandon my early dream of becoming an artist for a "safer" path.

Parenthood...
It wasn’t until I became a parent myself that I reclaimed my voice and creative purpose. I came to understand that I am not defined by labels, but by the value I place on my voice, my vision, and my artistic talent. Today, life is full and purposeful. I paint to honour the cultural resilience of individuals from the Black diaspora—whether they are Windrush pioneers, World War veterans, or our everyday heroes—ensuring they are seen, celebrated, and remembered for their invaluable contributions to society.

Pride and Legacy...
My portraits are a tribute to visibility, pride, and legacy. Through each brushstroke, I aim to educate, empower, and inspire — bringing the stories of our people into the light, where they have always belonged. Of all my achievements, I’m most proud that my parents witnessed my contribution to art, the shift in creativity of my latest collection, The Inheritance, and that I was recognised with an award for arts and culture by the borough I call home.
